21 Day Sugar Detox, Day 21: DAY TWENTY-ONE!!!

Posted by on Dec 16, 2012 in 21 DSD Daily Eats | 0 comments

Today is the last day of our 21 day sugar detox, and we wrapped it up a bit early for the sake of celebrating Hanukkah and Simon’s dad’s birthday. It just felt right. I couldn’t wait any longer for latkes. And wine. And brownies. I didn’t go overboard, don’t worry. Here’s what we had tonight: chicken liver pâté with rosemary crackers cucumber cups with smoked salmon, capers, and creme fraîche* bread & butter zucchini pickles (from the farmers market) classic latkes with apple sauce and sour cream sweet potato & chive latkes lemon & herb...

21 Day Sugar Detox, Day 20: A special guest post from Simon

Dear Sugar, It’s hard for me to say this, but we are done! At least for another day. It’s not me it’s you. I know we’ve been together for a long time and have had a lot of great fun together. Like that time I went to Santa Cruz beach boardwalk and you were waiting for me in the form of a Churo. Your crisp sweetness tempted me like Cindy Crawford to a 13 year old boy. Am I dating myself? Whatever she’s still hot! To be honest I’ve met someone else…Splenda. Just kidding, just making sure you all are paying attention. I ‘d sooner wax Robin...

21 Day Sugar Detox, Day 18: My name is Simone, and I am a dairy-aholic

If you’ve been reading along during this 21 Day Sugar Detox journey, you might have noticed that I consume a decent amount of cheese and put heavy cream in my coffee and my tea. I eat dairy. Dairy’s a funny topic. There are two very different schools of thought on whether it’s good for you or not. Here’s my take on it: If you don’t tolerate dairy well, and it gives you a stomach ache (or worse) then it is not good for you. If you notice other adverse reactions, such as acne or other skin problems, then it is also not good for you. And if you think it’s...

21 Day Sugar Detox, Days 16 & 17: I’m back. I wasn’t hiding in the guest room eating Snickers bars.

Day 16 HEADACHE. More stuff happened, good stuff. But the headache was the reason for no blogging. Here’s what happened: Alarm went off way before I was ready to get up (boo). Not enough sleep (blerg). Coffee (yay!). Drive (meh). Meeting (good!). Tea (Yum!). Grocery shopping (Meh). Home (yay!). Breakfast (woo-hoo!). But look how freaking cute she is. The headache started off as a not-enough-sleep headache, more of a brain fog than a true headache. It reminded me a lot of how I used to feel almost all the time; lethargic, brain fog, achy neck, general blah. I don’t feel this way...

21 Day Sugar Detox, Day 15: Can’t talk. Coconut.

I have so little to say, I actually tried to trick Simon into guest blogging this post. No dice. So instead of boring you with things I don’t have to say, let’s have some humor instead, shall we? When Someone Offers Me Quinoa. That should be an actual video instead of the link, but I’m done trying to figure it out. While you’re at it, browse the whole site. It always makes me laugh. Here’s my day in food pics. I had no idea I had such a colorful food day until I looked at these! Not bad, eh? I also had some snacks; pistachios and macadamias, and lots of tea....

21 Day Sugar Detox, Day 14: There is ONE situation in which a lack of duck fat is a good thing.

I almost just made latkes. And ate them. We were trying to figure out something to have with our leftover spicy tomato soup with chicken and lime, and nothing was jumping out at us. I said screw it, walked into the kitchen and was fully prepared to set up the food processor accordingly. In the 5 steps it took me to walk from the bedroom to the kitchen, I had completely justified just how okay it was to make latkes while doing a sugar detox. They’ll obviously still be gluten-free. It’s Hanukkah. I’m Jewish. We’ve completely ignored Hanukkah this weekend, and suddenly,...
