bacon wrapped sweet potato bites

Earlier this month, I had the honor of catering the Food For Humans book release party. The event started late morning, so a brunch menu was in order. I was going to need a lot of bacon. Enter US Wellness Meats, who was beyond generous and donated enough of their fabulous beef and pork bacon to feed 200 hungry Nom Nom Paleo fans. My prediction for Sunday’s big game? These will get snatched up faster than you can put them on platters and stab them with toothpicks. Bacon Wrapped Sweet Potato Bites with Guacamole makes 50-65 bites 2 sweet potatoes, about 1 1/2 pounds total 2 pounds bacon...

Smoked Squash Hummus

This recipe is part of my review of the Blendtec Designer Series Blender with Twister Jar. To enter to win one for yourself, click the image below! I can’t take credit for the genius of this recipe. I found my inspiration for it in Where There’s Smoke by Barton Seaver. The original recipe calls for cooking the squash in a bed of hot embers, which sounds downright dreamy. But I recognize that not everyone has hot embers at their disposal, so this method might not be practical for all. If you do, please go make the recipe exactly as he wrote it. Skip the baguette, obviously, but if...

Pear Cardamom Muffins

It’s Fall! Or at least that’s what the calendar says. In San Francisco, seasons really aren’t much more than what month the calendar is flipped to. (And yes, I still have a real life paper one, and it is always, always, a Hand Turkey Calendar) Having grown up in Western Massachusetts and Connecticut, it’s strange to live somewhere without crunchy leaves and the unmistakable crispness that comes with fall. I miss it. A lot. Winter? That I do not miss. At all. So I’ll stay where I am, and enjoy the weather that always feels something like a cross between spring...

Sweet Cinnamon Cereal or Cinnamon Graham Crackers

As a toddler, my mom used to put Cheerios in the pockets of my overalls in case I got hungry while toddling around. Not kidding. Before going mostly paleo, I LOVED cereal and always had several varieties in the pantry. I’ve never been into the sweet stuff, I can thank my Mom and my Cheerios habit for that. But I have always loved cereal as a snack, especially an after dinner one.   Since going mostly paleo, cereal has sadly vanished from my life. I know it’s for the best, since cereal has little to no nutritional value. And I’m glad that I no longer consider it a...

Tropical Breakfast Muffins

Breakfast. Let’s talk about it. I know that as someone who is mostly paleo, I should be eating dinner for breakfast. I should abandon the notion that breakfast food should look different than the foods we eat for the rest of our meals. We are, after all, the only species who does that. It’s silly. I know. But I’m not always in the mood for dinner for breakfast. And guess what happens if nothing in the house looks appetizing and I have to run out? That’s right; I don’t eat. And then I get hungry, and can’t find anything acceptable to eat, and then before I...
